 XML has been used as a means to represent structured information to be used by voice based applications, like voice portals that provide automated services to telephone users.

The W3 consortium has created a set of standards, known as VoiceXML, that define XML based formats to represent voice and generic audio elements and how they should they be presented during the interaction with the users.

This class provide a solution for simplifying the generation of grammar files in a XML format that is a VoiceXML standard meant to define how a given speech recognition application expects the user to interact using the voice.

Detailed description

This package is meant to generate grammar definition XML files for speech recognition applications according to W3 Consortium specification.

This XML format for speech grammars is part of the SRGS specification. Platforms conforming to the VoiceXML 2.0 specification are required to support this format. In addition, XML grammars are also supported within the SALT and XHTML + Voice specifications.

An XSLT Stylesheet is available from the W3C that allows developers to convert XML grammars to Augmented BNF Form, the other format required to be supported under the VoiceXML 2.0 specification.

As grammar formats go, the W3C XML format is the most broadly supported and has the most utility for voice application developers.
