Sorry, but that is just not true. There are thousands, if not million pages out there using a perfect way of stylesheets and lists, which work on any(!) browser, which knows how to handle CSS. I'm not sure, who's your adviser in those things, but he's wrong.

Like using "<td class="nbgu"> </td>" to handle space between navigation points? Why not using cellspacing? You even use it as a parameter in the navigation table, but set it to 0.

If you want a redesign, that's fine - and even more than necessary. But there is so much more wrong with the page, which can't be fixed just by replacing a template and some styles. To be honest, for 3000 dollars I would be able to rewrite the whole thing, making it good looking, usable AND secure. And I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Sorry, I don't want to be rude. I'm even trying to enter the contest. But the specifications are not easy to handle. :-(

It is not just working on any browser, but also look the same way.

For instance, the navigation bars are generated automatically by a class from a list of links that show on the tabs.

I wanted to make all the tabs have the same height. The height should be automatically determined by the browser according to the content of each tab.

I could not find a way to do it portably without having to set the height of the tabs to a specific value, which is against the requirement.

The only solution I found was to use CSS 3 table layout attributes. Not all browsers support such CSS 3 attributes. So that is not a good portable solution.

Actually using CSS 3 table layout attributes to make it look like tables but not using tables, is a ridiculous solution. It only pleases the tableless fanatics.

As for using cellspacing for the tab gaps, I suppose that you do not notice that that style defines a border used in the 3D effect of the tab. So it is not really just an empty space.

Other than that, as I mentioned, this contest is just for redesigning the page headers and footers. The body of the pages can be addressed at a later stage.

The site has too many types of pages, more than 50 certainly. You would take ages and unfairly paid if you accepted to do it all only for USD $3000.

Just to make a proposal and replace the 60 or so icon images in the current design, it will take you a long time. There are some proposals that replaced many of the icons, but I do not remember seeing one that did them all.

Anyway, if you are willing to submit a proposal for redesigning the headers and footers and you want achieve an effect that you have no idea how to do it, just let me know so I can advise.

I agree with Rik & Oliver Hermanni - Not only one developer here can deep redesign PHPC site to get new/better effect ...
1 picture = 1000 words.
So guys, You can show own preview by making sample page off-line and publish screenshot here. Maybe You will do great impression on PHPC staff and something will change :)

Redesign based only on CSS + main layout HTML is some kind of challenge. Because it's not easy , but because it's hard. Every single day during normal job do You have permission to change anything as You wanted ? I think not, developers have to obey for certain restriction in every implementation, even this obstacle consume more Your time to bypass root cause You can do nothing about it. Stay focus on target do Your best as is and let PHPC judge result of Your job. If content will be defeat maybe second edition will be with wider possibilities to customize. We have ~ 10 days left PHP brothers to prove that we can do more than only discuss so move forward.

Dear Manuel i can't fully agree with You that 3000$ is unfairly paid for more than 50 page to rework. There are many countries with cheap labor in East Europe, Asia, South America, Africa... where $3000 is about 6 months salary. During world finance crisis big brands are closing own offices in expensive area ( USA , West Europe) and move to the "east" company backend unforeseen for end customer. But it's PHP forum not economist.com board ;)

Keep in mind that it is not the PHPClasses site that will decide which design will win. There will be a voting period on which everybody can vote.

Anyway, once you submit your design and it is approved for the contest, everybody can see it here. If the author allows it to be seen before the voting period starts, you can see now live previews of the design proposal applied to real pages.

phpclasses.org/design/

It seems some people are not getting the HTML editor design right. It shows an editable WYSIWYG preview, but you can also edit the HTML template directly. Just click on the HTML button in the editor tool bar.

I intend to produce a screencast video soon to guide you through the steps of making all sorts of changes you want.

As for the prize amount being high, that was intentional. I am aware that it represents many minimum wages in many countries. The idea was to provide a good enough prize to make the contest appealing to users in every country.

The problem is that it is not possible to give prizes to all candidates. So, if you apply as candidate, it is a bet you make.

You can win the first prize and be famous if your design is well appreciated. Otherwise you can get some of the runner-up prizes, or nothing at all besides participation experience. Nothing else is being promised.
