And so, what happened to the major super duper feature that was going to be originally brought to PHP 6, that is, multibyte string support/Unicode/UTF/etc?

Will anything of it be included in PHP 5.4?

Well, the native Unicode support in PHP 6 was canceled. As far as I know, there are no plans to add it back.
