I promise to abandon PHP forever if the PHP extension dissapears. There is one major reason for using PHP compared to other languages and enviroments, the ability to communicate the MySQL database in an easy straightforward way.

The article should maybe clarify this is about killing off one way of using MySQL, it's just certain functions. Other ways of using MySQL with PHP will still exist, you'll just need to change function calls and perhaps use some OO classes.
