I use a shortened URL when sending SMS messages via email using an SMS Gateway.
An example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways becomes http://goo.gl/bnRG
Every character counts when you only get 160 of them!

Hi Fabio,
The Url shortening is useful wherever you need less characters to indicate a http address, which can be a QR Code, allowing you to have a less complex structure, thus lowering the possibility of errors in reading, and by the way allowing you to resize the QR code to a smaller ressolution, which takes less bandwidth in loading the image.
Annother example is , if you use SMS messagging or Twitter messagging (never understood that well why Twitter might be useful), as the limitation of text is the greatest problem here, and a long normal url, might already take a 30-40% of the message length.
The third point is linked to deep SEO, where a absolutely not keyword related URL, will under certain premises perform much better, than a keyword stuffed URL.
Hope I got you a better idea about these services and thanks for the article, which is well written and well understandable.
