This book's title is pretty accurate to its content. Core PHP Programming -Using PHP to Build Dynamic Web Sites is pretty much a restructuring of the PHP Manual. The book explains the core uses and how to apply to the Web. It covers all major functions, commands and database integration one could expect to use with PHP (just as the manual does) and better yet, it contains a CD with all the code used in the book. From simple routines to some advanced routines this CD is a great companion to this book.
To the novice, the book may be a tad to overwhelming. It does not clearly explain why you would use PHP. To the intermediate and professional programmer the book offers itself as a core manual and code library; from a quick review of the chapter on Constants or popping in the CD-ROM to take some code to save keystrokes.
Overall this book is good tool to have in the library. People I know unfamiliar with PHP in total found it confusing. People with knowledge of Perl, C, Java, etc. found it a clean reference. I think this book is a good edition to the programmer's library.

"Core PHP Programming - using PHP to build dynamic Web sites" is a very thorough book written by Leon Atkinson. It covers all the important aspects that matter for users interested in learning about programming of Web sites of dynamic content.

The book covers the capabilities of PHP not only as programming language but also as way to interface with back end databases, operating system resources and many other kinds of resources that are frequently used by Web applications like cookies, dynamically generated images, etc..

The style of the book is very good because almost every topic comes with examples and pictures that clearly demonstrate what is explained in the respective paragraphs. One important aspect that makes this book an excellent purchase is that it comes with a CD that comes not only with the examples, but also comes with Unix and Windows archives of PHP 3, Apache Web server 1.3, Xitami Web server. One nice addition to this set of free programs, are the example scripts taken from Boaz Yahav WeberDev.com site and David Sklar px.sklar.com site.

The book does not yet cover PHP 4 features because it was released before PHP 4 was made available, but that does not make it less complete because all the main aspects of PHP 3 are covered which is good enough to get you started with PHP and take advantage of the most important features of this language to build dynamic Web sites. Overall this is an excellent general purpose book for learning PHP.
